WPL Kids - Lunar New Year 2024

Lunar New Year — also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year, Tet for Vietnamese Canadians, or Seollal for Korean Canadians — starts with the first new moon of the year and is marked by a multi-day celebration. In 2024, the Lunar New Year falls on February 10 and is the first day of the New Year for many Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Laos and other Asian cultures. Customs and traditions may differ by region, but generally families celebrate through traditions of honouring deities and ancestors, hosting a New Year’s Eve dinner, and cleaning house to sweep away bad luck and welcome good fortune. In China, elders offer youth red envelopes filled with money wishing them health, growth and good studies for the year. This list includes books about Lunar New Year as well as newly published kids books by Asian authors.
