Cate Blanchett is amazing and Judi Dench delivers her greatest performance to date in this very cruel tale that explores the crippling effects of loneliness and the desperate measures some people take in order to feel connected with another human being.  Both Miss Covett and Mrs. Hart (note the names) suffer from an aching emptiness in their lives, and both try to fill that void by feeding off others.  When their paths eventually cross the results are both tragic and irreversible.  Eyre keeps the tension high with tight claustrophobic close-ups and a pounding score by Philip Glass while the actors wring every emotional nuance out of a very clever script.  Simply brilliant.
