I read a lot of books to my son who is now 9. He reads, but I read him stuff that he would not otherwise read. I am a big fan of this series. Much of tween literature is laced with sarcastic, sardonic and pessimistic humor. While this is OK sometimes, I find the intensity of this trend in literature disturbing. This is why I welcome this series so much. It is thoroughly entertaining while remaining sincere and positive for the most part. That said, the first book in this series is not the strongest. It is very good, but the second and third books are even better. They provide all kinds of (safe) material for me to discuss gender roles, sexuality and hierarchy with my son.
