While some prefer Adrian Lyne's later, more faithful to the novel adaptation, I like Kubrick's more, even if it isn't the most accurate. The thing I prefer about it is the stronger streak of satire and black humor, of which Kubrick was a master throughout his long career. I think Sue Lyon and James Mason give great performances too, though Peter Sellers steals the movie. While the movie isn't Kubrick's best, even by this point in his career (The Killing and Paths of Glory are his true early triumphs), Lolita is a transitional film for Kubrick, the bridge between his early work and Dr. Strangelove, his first true masterpiece in my mind and the first of the many masterpieces he would helm from the late 1960s onward.
