Solid high science fiction for a book based on a video game. I've never been that interested in the lore of the Halo games, and I can't remember how I came across this book. Either way, the story within it was excellent, and could probably stand on its own merits if it had nothing to do with the Halo series. The story includes concepts such as civilization collapse, class conflict, imperialism and the re-assimilation of war veterans. It takes a while for the story to pick up, but after slogging through the first 1/3rd of the book, its worth it to read. The same goes for the two sequel books, "Silentum" and "Primordium". The overall story takes place more than 100,000 years before the Halo series takes place, and involves the fall of the forerunner civilization after a war with the progenitors to modern humans. It also explains the origins of the Flood, the Forerunners, the Precursors, the Prophets and the original humans of the galaxy.
