I am actually pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did! I've never really been drawn to Armstrong's work before but this was really interesting and a great, fast read. I couldn't put my iPad down. Olivia Taylor-Jones has the life. Privileged upbringing, an Ivy League education, and is ready to be married in a month. That all comes crashing down when it is revealed that not only is she adopted, she is the child of famed serial killers Todd and Pamela Larsen. When her finace and her mother are less than supportive as she would like she strikes off on her own to the small town of Cainsville and ends up looking to prove if her birth parents really are murderers. Olivia is very relatable. Her actions and reactions I can easily see myself doing or having and they all make sense. She's been brought up privileged but she's far from a spoiled rich girl and absolutely refuses to take the easy way out by calling her mom or taking her mother's money. I also love her interactions with lawyer Gabriel Walsh. They both know how to act and manipulate to get what they want and there is a great partnership and teamwork here. They are so similar but so different and that works out perfectly for their work together. There is a supernatural bent here but, being as this is book one, it is very small and it's not the same as Armstrong's other books. It's a lot more of a slow burn mystery so consider yourselves warned if you're looking for something similar to her other works. Do give it a try though. As I said, it's a fun and easy read and I'm certainly eagerly awaiting the next one!
