The first thing I noticed about this book were the gorgeous illustrations. They are rich and colorful. I like the depth of the story where a little girl who doesn't act like herself--so she can please others--suddenly becomes everything else but herself. She becomes striped and feathered and treelike. An older child would understand these transformations. A younger child would not only not understand, but could be very disturbed and frightened by the images. The book is advertized for ages 4-8. This is completely inappropriate. The youngest age range I would recommend this book to would be 2nd or 3rd grade. This book also has a higher vocabulary than would be appropriate for the younger children. I used this book in my classroom when I taught fifth grade. Would I recommend this book? YES. For ages 8 and up.
