I’ve never read Nora Roberts before, and to be completely honest, I probably never would have if I didn’t see it lying around my house during the summer. Needless to say, it was an interesting read. This is more than your typical romance; it has a modern day Romeo and Juliet kind of twist, the whole forbidden love thing. In this romance, Senator Alan MacGregor falls head over heels for the eccentric Shelby Campbell. He is determined to be with her, even though it is the last thing she wants to happen, and not just because of their families’ century old feud. In the second part of the book, Grant Campbell, Shelby’s older brother finds himself in love with the famous artist Genevieve Grandeau, much to his dislike. He is isolated from people, the opposite of Gennie, and in this novel he learns what it really means to love someone. This was an interesting romance, but perhaps a tad predictable. The reason people read these books, is not for surprise endings, but to see character development between two characters, and how two people of opposite personalities slowly fall in love. I think the two stories are contrast and although both couples are in love, they go about it differently. For Alan, it was love at first sight (something I wasn’t really fond of, as it was based all on her appearance and exterior) whereas with Grant, it was something he had to accept over time. What I enjoyed about this book was that, after Alan and Shelby’s story was finished, we still saw them in Grant and Gennie’s story. If you’re big on romances, you might want to check this book out it could be your next favourite.
