Blind Date with a Book 2018 comment: "I don't usually enjoy books on murders. But since this author was from Montreal, my home town, I thought I'd read it."

Canadian Robert Cowens's character (appeared in The Hua Shan Hospital Murders) in this this book, was he just an easy character to use because of the convenience of proximity?
is the idea that the Vancouver business community is intolerant to Jews part of his character? if not seems rather sweeping. no beginning or end, just plunked down in the midst.
Banff>"Robert, dressed in a suit wearing a topcoat, the only one that Fong had seen in Banff, entered. "you're the only one in this town wearing a suit and tie." (quite possible in Banff I guess even if at a conference that would be attended by academics and professionals as well as police/security etc.) "I'm the only one west of Winnipeg that even owns one."
Spoiler Alert
The British >British Columbia >purity twist is pretty thin seems a little desperate on the part of the author. Messy book, but enjoyed his others.

Zhong Fong is head of Shanghai's Special Investigations Unit. He investigates the epidemic of AIDS in a distant province and discovers that people are selling their blood and getting transfusions of tainted blood to replace it. He flies to Banff to take part in an international conference on terrorism and tries to track down the businessmen who sell blood. Rotenberg writes amusing scenes such as Chinese eating at a Banff Chinese restaurant, and his plot is sound. I thought he went off topic to lecture on mistreatment of Chinese for building railroads, and he inserted a whole chapter on the sad travel of a Chinese couple with AIDS from a rural setting to an urban hospital. It's a change from the cozy British mystery.
