Science fiction version of Xenophon's Anabasis where they have to fight their way home without support. In this case crash landed on an alien planet with assorted sized predators, pre-industrial civilizations, across the mountain, a seaport to a spaceport over the ocean held by their high tech enemies. However, that's in book two & three. Battalion handicapped by malfunctioning plasma gum in humid environment thanks to chiseling contractor & corrupt procurer.
