Fifi is fascinated by her new neighbours and wants to know what goes on behind all those shabby front doors. Why is Yvette, the French dressmaker, such a hermit? Why doesn't widower Frank join his daughter and grandchildren in Australia? And why doesn't the formidable and well-bred Miss Diamond move somewhere smarter?

Lesley Pearse is one of my favourite authors. This title came out in 2005 and is still being widely read which is indicative of its worth as a commentary on the life and times and the family relationships in the late fifties and early sixties in Britain. The heroine, Felicity Brown, known as Fifi, goes off from Bristol to London with Dan, who is not at all her mother's idea of a suitable husband. He is a bricklayer who has had a bad start in life. (Salt of the earth, of course.) Fifi has an endless curiosity about people and their background stories, starting with their neighbours in a run-down part of London where they find a flat. It is not long before she sees something she shouldn't and a trail of evil events ensues. Not for the squeamish but....it is for all that, a delightful and insightful story .

I like the writing style and usually love this author, but this was just too evil for me. Nightmare material!
