“There are monsters among us. There always have been and there always will be. I’ve known that ever since I can remember, just like I’ve always known I was one…

…Well, half of one, anyway.”

Welcome to the Big Apple. There’s a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side—and that’s only the beginning. Of course, most humans are oblivious to the preternatural nightlife around them, but Cal Leandros is only half-human.

His father’s dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares—and he and his entire otherworldly race are after Cal. Why? Cal hasn’t exactly wanted to stick around long enough to find out.

He and his half-brother Niko have managed to stay a step ahead for three years, but now Cal’s dad has found them again. And Cal is about to learn why they want him, why they’ve always wanted him…for he is the key to unleashing their hell on earth. The fate of the human world will be decided in the fight of Cal’s life…

If you like the show Supernatural, you might like this series. It has the same premise (2 brothers off on their own fighting supernatural monsters) but has its own little quirks to differentiate itself. Cal, the youngest brother, is sarcastic and angsty yet extremely loveable. His mother bred (yeah that's the best word for it, trust me) with these terrifying creatures called the Auphe so poor Cal is half monster and constantly beats himself up about it. Niko, the eldest brother, is smart, disciplined, and lethal. Together they roam New York City looking for jobs and somehow always end up in a bigger mystery. There are some great side characters as well, but I won't spoil their appearances. Definitely worth checking out, if only for Cal's hilariously snarky narration.

A good urban fantasy book, with an enjoyable overall plot, good origin story of Cal and Niko Leandros, and great overall pacing. The one thing that left me flat was the relatively poor dialog, in my opinion. It felt juvenile, but not in a "young adult writing" kind of way, but in a first novel kind of way. Certainly not bad enough for me to not want to read more of the story, but definitely bad enough that I am hoping it gets sharper as the series progresses!

This book is the author's first novel and well worth the read. Outrageious supernaturals turn up one after another, even in Central Park, but it's the hip writing, the incredible wit ,the deft human touch that elevates this fiction. Loved , loved, loved it and can't wait to read the sequel. Stephen Kind, look out--Rob Thurman is striking a bold swath through horror, mystery and legend. Carolyn

Aw, it's not "very good" in a literary sense, it was just so darn much fun, I haven't enjoyed a new fantasy (or whatever) series like this in years. Cal's a cynical soulmate of Corwin of Amber. The brothers together are everything I like about their TV counterparts Sam and Dean Winchester. The evil villains are great.

This is such a great series. Smart, funny, suspenseful and surprising. A great read for fans of urban fantasy.
