On her first tour as a knight errant, Alanna assumes a position of influence with a fierce desert tribe, makes some changes in the role of women in the society, and continues her own emotional development. "Let her prove herself worthy as a man." Newly knighted, Alanna of Trebond seeks adventure in the vast desert of Tortall. Captured by fierce desert dwellers, she is forced to prove herself in a duel to the death -- either she will be killed or she will be inducted into the tribe. Although she triumphs, dire challenges lie ahead. As her mythic fate would have it, Alanna soon becomes the tribe's first female shaman -- despite the desert dwellers' grave fear of the foreign woman warrior. Alanna must fight to change the ancient tribal customs of the desert tribes -- for their sake and for the sake of all Tortall. Alanna's journey continues.

The best book in the series so far. Alanna leaves the palace for a far more interesting environment, and her gender is no longer a secret. The pace slows down so that the book covers just one year of her life, and that means that events and relationships get more depth. As you'd expect, she's a more mature character than in the previous books, and I was happy to get to know here without Jon or George around (since I found the romance in the earlier books a bit predictable and perfunctory).

Alanna never disappoints me. Even as she grows up, becomes more of a woman while maintaining her sense of self and her knighthood, she continues to amazing and I love it. I will say, this story was a little more uneventful than the other two without the ever-looming power of Duke Roger, but it was a necessary bridge to explore the world, increase Alanna's abilities and heat up the romances. Cause man, this love triangle has got me in a tisy. I am excited and ready for the conclusion of this amazing journey.

I love this book because of the feminism and her struggle to prove to everyone that men and women are equal. Especially when she moves in to a tribe and tries to change traditions that have always existed. All thought I did not think I felt the necessity to put some love drama just yet because it was too much going on at the same time and I thought of it as overwhelmingand slightly confusing.

A good read. Not the best book I've ever read, but it's still worth reading.

Alanna now finnished her knight training has now left Tortall kingdom to go out on her own with her servant Coram, her cat Faithful and her magical sword Lightning down to the south. They are on route when they encounter a Bazhir tribe called the Bloody Hawk and in order to be accepted amongst the Bazhir she and Coram had to become one of their own. Even after becoming one of their own the shaman (leader) of the tribe was still convinced that she was evil and decides to kill her. While trying to kill her with a magic spell he used all of his energy and he killed his own self. Alana being the responsible for 'killing' him has to become shaman (the first girl shaman) and train other shaman so she can continue her journey through the desert. She decides to train three members of the tribe who have the gift to become a shaman and use their powers (which two of them were girls). After training the three Bazhir to use their magic properly the only boy who was going to enroll himself as a shaman dies also draining his magic and the two women are left alone to become shaman. After Alanna enrolls the two girls as shamans she continues her route to explore the rest of the desert.
