The third in the Shardlake series and this time the plot deftly works in Henry VIII, Catherine Howard, Jane Rochford, Thomas Culpepper and Francis Dereham. The plot is intriguing, the climax is unexpected and the antagonist is a shock. The author develops Shardlake even more in this book. Shardlake is clever and not pretentious, moral and not sanctimonious, and very, very human. The reader not only admires and respects him, but starts to love him. Can't wait for the next!

Samsom does it again. Totally engrossing tale set during the reign of Henry VIII. Hard to put down.

Fantastic book! Ordered it in ethusiastic search of more books around Henry VIII historical period. This was an unexpected delight. Like the characters, the intertwined storylines and the images that link in my head to stories by Philippa Gregory and the TV series the Tudors.
