I've not read Pym before, but found this an excellent portrayal of life in a small community & a different era. However, with a few minor changes in time period this is what (I believe) is the same today. Living in a large community nearly anonymous is much less of 'knowing the business of others'. So is gossip a normal human behavior?

On rereading after many years, I am refreshed, as I imagine I would be if I could properly meditate. Pym makes the ordinary significant, as important and pleasing to observe as anything on Earth.
