But there are two spanners in the work - one in the shape of Detective Inspector Craig Wilkinson, a man embittered by his failure to arrest Mr Pargeter while he was alive, and the other in the shape of his ambitious new partner, Detective Sergeant Hughes.
For as Mrs Pargeter recreates one of her husband's classic operations in order to honour her promise, she finds herself under the beady-eyed scrutiny of two policemen - both of whom determined to make their mark...
