Directed by Dan Ireland (The Whole Wide World) and based on an unforgettable story by E.L. Doctorow, Jolene follows the provocative tale of a beautiful, redheaded Southern girl on a ten-year journey across America. From age fifteen to twenty-five, Jolene overcomes a myriad of adversity, as she navigates her way through bad foster homes and a failed teenage marriage, escapes from a mental institution, and hits the road in search of love, adventure and independence.

Jolene is watchable and compelling. As other reviewers have commented, Chastain brings her acting skills to give us a rich character who keeps making choices that put her back at square one.

Analyzing from Jolene's character standpoint, I didn't buy a few of Jolene's choices. I wonder if the screenwriter truly understood the character when adapting the movie from book. We see her in different places in her life and things happening to her, usually because another love interest has become obsessed with her. I had a few eye roll moments.

That said, I kept watching, wanting to know what happened to Jolene.

Jessica Chastain is fantastic as Jolene. She gives a really great performance in this movie. The movie itself is a story of both sadness and triumph for Jolene, as she overcomes adversity and grows into a strong, independent woman.

No wonder everyone and their uncle wants to cast Jessica Chastain in their movie. Chastain is radiant; it's like she glows from within. She's perfect for the eternal optimist Jolene who manages to squeeze every bit of joy out of a life that would have had most people curling up in a ball and wishing for death. Rest assured that Russell Brand is not in this movie. When I took a quick glance at the cover, I drew back in trepidation. It's only Rupert Friend looking a little Russell Brandian.

Jessica Chastain's first lead in a feature film. She's my favorite young actress these days and the BEST part of this film. --- Basically (to my mind) this is a story of the many ways people can make mistakes and how life requires that one keeps trying to make things better.
(I didn't really like the story itself very much)

good acting, solid believable story <could've been from true events> and unfortunately much like what it is in society and this is probably played down from most girls reality, 16 no family and on the road in order to find one or atleast a home.
