Lester, affiliated with The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, holds degrees in psychology and studied under Abraham Maslow. Here, he presents a new theory of personality, called the subself theory of the mind, drawing on the work of Freud, George Kelly, and Andras Angyal. This theory conceives of the mind as consisting of a set of subselves (autonomous and organized sets of psychological processes in the mind) which co-exist with other sets in one individual. The book begins with a list of postulates and corollaries summarizing the theory and its implications. The author demonstrates how psychological disturbance can arise from symptoms of pressure, intrusion, and invasion between subselves, and maintains that integration of subselves is a task for the second half of life. Related topics discussed include dissociation and beliefs in possession and reincarnation. In a postscript, the author compares his theory with other theories.
