Book News
This fascinating study situates the larger phenomenon of the significant growth in Latino population throughout the U.S. in the city of Richmond, where wide economic, housing, and educational disparities between African American and white are historically the norm. For this book, the authors (both teach sociology; Schleef at the U. of Mary Washington, Cavalcanti at James Madison U.) collected a range of data in 2001-2002 and conducted 174 interviews to create a nuanced image of the place of Latinos in Richmond and the South. Notable in the study is the differences that exist between those who moved to Richmond before and after 1990. Family life, attitudes towards bilingual education, levels of education, political preferences and participation, and ethnic identification are some of the issues discussed in the text, which is supplemented throughout by bar graphs and tables of the data collected. Chapters on the difficulties of assimiliation, the nature of segmentation, and the stories of how individuals and their families came to Richmond flesh out the topic, making this a useful study for a wide range of readers.
