An exploration and translation of the work of Hindu poet-saint Karaikkal Ammaiyar.

Book News
The "Mother from Karaikkal" was probably the first poet to write hymns to the god Siva in Tamil, about the middle of the sixth century, says Craddock (religion, Southwestern U.), and her 143 poems became part of the foundation for what became the dominant philosophical, theological, and ritual system associated with Siva in the southernmost Indian state of Tamilnadu. She looks at Karaikkal Ammaiyar's place in South Indian history, what her poetry and her stories reveal about her, and the temples and their festivals. The poems themselves, in English translation, are provided in the final chapter. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
