Skeat (1907-2003) spent his working life at the British Museum, his final decade before retiring in 1972 as Keeper, Department of Manuscripts and Egerton Librarian. The 23 essays here were originally published between 1938 and 2001, and concern biblical manuscripts in the collections he oversaw. Within sections on ancient book production, New Testament manuscripts, and textual variants, they discuss such matters as the use of dictation in ancient book production, whether papyrus was regarded as cheap or expensive in the ancient world, the provenance of the Codex Alexandrinus (perhaps the oldest manuscript of the four gospels), and a modern Greek parallel to St. Mark 16:8.
