The 1962 publication of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring greatly contributed to a new environmental awareness in the United States. In 1970, the federal government created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which established and enforced various forms of pollution controls. One of the first practices the newly-formed agency regulated was the widespread use of certain pesticides, typically spread over fields by a crop duster airplane, that harmed the environment.
