On September 10, 1960, over two thirds of Americans tuned in to watch Vice President Richard M. Nixon met Senator John F. Kennedy in the first televised presidential debate. Nixon refused to wear makeup for the broadcast, appearing haggard next to his younger rival. The difference was significant in the eyes of voters. Americans who watched the debate on television generally thought Nixon lost, while most of those who listened on radio thought he won.
