A bullet lodged in Vladimir Lenin's neck contributed to a series of strokes that began in 1922, leaving him increasingly paralyzed. In 1924 Lenin died from complications of one such stroke. Against his wishes, Lenin's body was preserved and put on permanent display in Moscow's Red Square. The city of St. Petersburg, which before the October Revolution had housed the Tsar's government, was renamed Leningrad in his honor. Following the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia voted to change the name back to St. Petersburg during a 1991 referendum.
