The cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union also initiated a technological rivalry between the two superpowers. On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space. The success of this mission spurred U.S. president John F. Kennedy to announce that the American astronauts would successfully land on the moon by the end of the decade.
