Stokely Carmichael was a major figure in the 1960s Civil Rights movement. He was an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and was later elected its chairman. Carmichael coined the term "black power" in a 1966 speech in Greenwood, Mississippi. In 1967 he left SNCC and joined the more militant Black Panther Party, but he left the party a few months later.
