Offered in 0 more formatsThe 1920s revealed a cultural divide between religious conservatives and the scientific community over the expanding science curriculum being taught in public schools. Social conservatives had succeeded in passing anti-evolution legislation in 15 states. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) hoped to prove in court that laws forbidding the teaching of evolution were unconstitutional. The result was the high-profile Scopes Trial, held in Dayton, Tennessee. John Scopes, a biology teacher who taught evolution, agreed to test the state's ban in court. The famous attorney Clarence Darrow led the defense, while famous orator and former presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan led the prosecution. At Darrow's urging the jury found Scopes guilty, because he hoped to take the case to the Supreme Court. However, the conviction was overturned, preventing the Court from ruling on the law's constitutionality.
