Following the successful Soviet launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957, the United States entered into a "space race" with the Soviet Union. Each country attempted to develop new satellites and spacecraft that they felt would prove the superiority of their respective economic systems during the rivalry of the cold war. In 1960, the United States launched a greatly improved weather satellite that would help forecasters predict the weather with greater accuracy.
