In the 1960s, Chinese premier Mao Zedong developed what became known as the Cultural Revolution, a widespread movement to prevent what Mao considered a loss of leftist ideology in China's counterpart, the Soviet Union. During the Cultural Revolution, thousands of young Chinese civilians were given military training and taught to fight those who drifted from the Communist Party line.
