East Germans Escape Across the Berlin Wall Ca. 1961Unknown - 1961
In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built to prevent East Germans from fleeing to West Germany. At first, the wall was no more than a wire fence, and it was fairly easy for people to drop from nearby apartment buildings over the borderline to West Berlin. In order to prevent this, East German police forced the relocation of anyone who lived along the border. During the wall's 28-year existence, 5,000 people managed to escape across it; nearly 200 were killed in the attempt.
