On July 29, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed an act creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Although NASA was a Cold War program, created in response to the Soviet space program, it was civilian controlled, in an attempt to prevent military escalation and to promote peaceful research. On November 10, 1961, NASA sent a chimpanzee named Enos into orbit around Earth in a test flight for John Glenn's planned manned orbit. This video shows footage of Earth taken during orbit from Enos's capsule, the Mercury Atlas 5.
