In 1958, Mao Zedong announced a new plan for China known as the Great Leap Forward, which he hoped would expedite the development of China's heavy industries. Believing that he could mobilize the millions of unskilled laborers in rural areas, Mao sought to build an iron and steel mill in every village. Mao's plan was largely disastrous for the Chinese economy, as 80 million peasant farmers were organized into communes and instructed to use new methods of farming. Many were coerced into working as steel smelters with little or no experience, resulting in massive soil erosion and famine throughout China. Communist Party leaders convinced Mao to cancel the Great Leap Forward in 1960.
