Richard Daley, the longtime mayor of Chicago, became a symbol of the deep divide within the Democratic Party in 1968. During both the Illinois and National Democratic conventions, which were held in Chicago, Daley stressed maintaining "law and order" and alienated many of the youthful supporters of antiwar candidate Senator Eugene McCarthy.
