People Drive Cars on A Congested Los Angeles Highway Ca. 1969Unknown - 1969
Despite having a well-developed public transportation system and a relatively typical population density, at the end of the 20th century, Los Angeles had the worst traffic congestion of any city in the United States. This was largely because Los Angeles experienced its greatest period of growth after World War II, when the automobile became the primary mode of transportation - roads were developed to accommodate a growing number of cars. However, the construction of new roads did not keep pace with the ever-increasing population.
