President Nixon's inauguration came in the midst of the Vietnam War, and Nixon's ability to win the presidential election, was due, in part, to Americans' displeasure with Lyndon B. Johnson's handling of the war. The nation was ready for change. Nixon had not yet outlined his own plan, and did not want to admit defeat in Vietnam. In this excerpt from his inaugural speech he calls for peace, but it is peace through decisive victory.
