In this film, author John Cooper Clarke examines the first autobiographical account of drug addiction ever published. Written in the early nineteenth century, Thomas de Quincey's "Confessions of an English Opium Eater" was riotously successful. Instead of warning readers to stay away from opium like he promised was his intention, the novel reportedly raised consumption of opium. Relationships with his contemporaries, Wordsworth and Coleridge, influenced De Quincey and his sensationalized narrative.
