Prisoners of War (or POWs) were of great concern to Americans, and it was assumed that POWs were being tortured by their captors. As a result of the Paris accords, almost 600 POWs were released by North Vietnam in 1973; some of these POWs had been held since the mid-1960s. Despite heavy anti-war sentiment and no decisive victory in Vietnam, many POWs were received as heroes when they returned to the United States.
