Angela Davis, a political activist and an academic, has worked throughout her life as part of the Civil Rights movement, and on behalf of women's and prisoners' rights. She was active in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party, and the Communist Party. In 1970 Davis became one of the FBI's 10 Most Wanted as an alleged accomplice in a kidnapping and murder charge; following a sensational manhunt and trial, she was cleared of all charges in 1972. Later that year, Davis toured the USSR, East Germany, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and Cuba. In 1979 she was awarded the International Lenin Peace Prize. Davis eventually left the Communist Party, but continues to espouse causes related to social justice.
