The thawing of diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and the United States, known as detente, led to a number of treaties aimed at preventing nuclear war. One such treaty, the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT I), set limits on the number and type of long-range missiles the two nations could stockpile. President Richard Nixon traveled to the Soviet Union to sign the treaty, making him the first U.S. president to visit the country since the end of World War II.
