In 1973, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) imposed an oil embargo on the United States, causing increased gasoline prices and fuel shortages. As a result, Americans began demanding smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. By the end of the 20th century, however, the price of gasoline had fallen and large autos such as sport utility vehicles (SUVs) had become popular.
