Cleaner energy sources will be necessary to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This documentary investigates an unexpected treasure in the ocean floor: methane hydrate, gas trapped in ice. Seeking energy independence after the Fukushima disaster, the Japanese government has funded scientific exploration and extraction trials in the Sea of Japan and in the Nankai Trough. Follow engineers and scientists as they test methods of dissociating gas from ice, investigate potential risks of extracting methane from the seabed, and consider environmental impacts on marine ecosystems and microorganisms relying upon methane for survival. Initial trials indicate a huge energy potential, but further technological development is required to make commercial exploitation viable.
