The 1973 war between Israel, Egypt, and Syria - known as the Yom Kippur War - marked a turning point in Israel's relationship to the Arab countries surrounding it. The success of the surprise attack by Egypt and Syria helped to dispel the myth of Israel's military invincibility, while the failure of Egypt to reacquire its past land holdings through military means convinced Egyptian president Anwar Sadat to negotiate a peace treaty with Israel.
