The Watergate scandal began with the botched bugging of the Democratic Party's national headquarters in 1972 and ended with President Nixon's resignation in 1974. When Watergate burglar James McCord testified that top-level government officials pressured him and others to lie about the origins of the crime, heavy investigations followed. Eventually President Nixon was implicated and threatened with impeachment, weakening public trust in the federal government.
