The Watergate scandal was investigated by a Senate committee led by Sam Ervin (R-NC). According to the committee's findings, those involved in the scandal may have influenced the 1972 presidential election and attempted to cover up their criminal activity. The break-in took place in June 1972. The Senate hearings were conducted beginning in the spring of 1973. In the summer of 1974, President Nixon faced impeachment hearings and resigned on August 8, 1974.
