In January, 1979, the Shah of Iran was overthrown during the Iranian Revolution. In late October the Shah was permitted to enter the United States to receive medical treatment. Less than two weeks later, on November 4, students stormed the U.S. embassy in Iran, taking hostages. Ayatollah Khomeini, who now led Iran, publicly condoned the actions of the students and refused to intervene. The hostage crisis continued for over a year, with 53 hostages released on January 20, 1981, the day of President Reagan's inauguration.
