In the late 1970s the Sandinistas, a guerilla group backed by Fidel Castro, overthrew the authoritarian leader of Nicaragua, Anastasio Somoza. While President Carter had previously urged Somoza to step down, the Sandinistas' coup created new diplomatic challenges for the United States.
