On October 6, 1981, religious extremists murdered Egyptian president Anwar Sadat while he reviewed a military parade in Cairo. Sadat alienated Egypt from the rest of the Arab world in 1979 when he signed the Camp David accords, which established peace between Egypt and Israel. He also became deeply unpopular in his own country where his western policies and personal lifestyle clashed with those of the mostly conservative Muslim population.
