Shortly after taking office in 1981, President Ronald Reagan nominated Sandra Day O'Connor, a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals, to serve as an associate justice of the Supreme Court. The first woman to serve on the Court, O'Connor voiced moderately conservative opinions from the bench until her retirement in 2006.
