Alaska Pipeline Transports Oil Ca. 1982Unknown - 1982
In 1968 the United States discovered vast oil reserves in ice-locked Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. President Nixon signed the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act in 1973, which authorized the building of a pipeline between Prudhoe Bay and the nearest ice-free port, Valdez. The pipeline, completed in 1977, stretches nearly 800 miles and is capable of transporting one million barrels of oil a day.
