In 1968 the United States discovered vast oil reserves in ice-locked Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. President Nixon signed the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act in 1973, which authorized the building of a pipeline between Prudhoe Bay and the nearest ice-free port, Valdez.
