The space shuttle, developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the late 1970s, provides a reusable vehicle in which astronauts can conduct experiments and repair satellites. Each shuttle is launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and relies on two solid rocket boosters to propel the craft into space. In light of the shuttle flaws shown by the Challenger and Columbia disasters, NASA plans to retire the shuttle sometime after 2011.
